Marina Ou, hypnotherapist

Marina Ou
Once shy, now a hypnotherapist.
Living proof that you can change.

Where you are now

There’s something you’ve wanted to do for years — start your business, change careers, pass an exam, finally put yourself out there — and you always talk about it in the future tense.

And you always have a good reason: “I don’t have time,” “I’m not ready yet,” “I’m not good enough yet,” “it’s not the right time.”

You brought it up with someone one night. Then you changed the subject right away.

Deep down, you know: what’s stopping you isn’t failing. It’s other people watching you fail.

It’s not procrastination.
It’s protection.
And that can change.

What happened

What you believe about yourself isn’t the truth. It’s just a sentence.

When you were little, something happened that you probably don’t remember. Maybe you dared to raise your hand to speak, you got it wrong, and everyone laughed. Today, you’d think nothing of it.

But your brain did its job: it protected you. “I don’t want her to go through that again.” So it wrote a sentence that became a rule — “don’t put yourself out there again, or you’ll make a fool of yourself” — and locked it in a safe without giving you the combination.

It’s been enforcing it ever since. You get motivated, you tell yourself this time is different, you even get started. And the moment it’s time to be seen, you pull back — and you find another good reason to wait.

Your motivation is working on the outside. The sentence is locked in the safe. And the sentence is what’s calling the shots.

And that sentence can be rewritten with hypnotherapy: we find the combination to the safe, open it, read what’s written inside — and write a new one.

My own sentence

It didn’t even take a sentence. One word was enough.

Marina as a child, age 7
Age 7

“Chinetoc”
I was 7.

“Chinetoc” is a French slur aimed at people of Asian descent.

I started hating my eyes and feeling ashamed of my Asian heritage. I decided I was different — and that no one could love me like that. And since I couldn’t be loved, I could at least avoid being rejected. So my brain wrote its sentence: “don’t take up space.”

I obeyed for 20 years. I stayed quiet, I kept my opinions to myself, I made sure people forgot I was there. There was a time when I didn’t dare walk into a bakery.

I was tired of not being myself. So I tried to change by reading self-help books and repeating positive affirmations in the mirror, but nothing changed.

One hypnotherapy session is what silenced that sentence — and wrote a new one in its place: I can be loved just as I am.

Why I do this today

Because hypnotherapy did in one session what I hadn’t managed in 20 years. When I walked out, something clicked: this is what I wanted to do. I got trained and made it my career. Today, I help other women rewrite their sentence — and nothing makes me happier than watching one of them finally go after the thing she’d been putting off for years.

Your questions

What is hypnosis?

A state of deep focus that you already know: it’s the one where you’re driving and arrive at your destination without remembering the drive. Hypnosis is the state; hypnotherapy is the work we do in it.

What does a hypnotherapy session look like?

90 minutes, over video, from your home. We start by talking — you only close your eyes when you’re ready. You don’t fall asleep, you hear everything, you remember everything. Then I guide you to the scenes where the sentence was written. You look at them through the eyes of who you are today, and we write a new one — in your words.

Will I lose control?

No. You’re aware from start to finish, and you can open your eyes whenever you want. If we could make people do things against their will, every hypnotist would be a multimillionaire. And the ones who never wake up — where would they be? Hypnosis is a natural state: you come out of it by opening your eyes.

Will I have to tell you everything?

No. We’re looking for one specific scene, not your whole life. And if there are things you don’t want to talk about, you don’t talk about them — what matters isn’t what happened, it’s what you concluded from it. What’s said in the session stays in the session.

I’ve already tried therapy, and it didn’t work.

I’m not going to tell you it’s useless. But the difference is simple: in therapy, you talk about what happened to you, from where you are today. In hypnotherapy, you go back there. You see the scene again — and you change what you concluded from it.

€899 is a lot.

Yes. And I’m not going to tell you otherwise. But that dream you keep talking about in the future tense — how many years has it been waiting? That’s the real question.

The Confidence Mode

You don’t need to become someone else.

Your sentence is still in the safe.

A year from now, you’ll either have rewritten it — or it will still be deciding for you.
